DISCOVER ROCHESTER | IDDLES LANE
Tucked away in the heart of Rochester is a mural with a very local story.
Iddles Lane features a striking sepia-toned portrait of former Victorian homicide detective Ron Iddles, who became known as “Australia’s greatest detective” with a reported conviction rate of 99%.
But the mural tells more than Ron’s story: Created by renowned artist Tim Bowtell, it traces the Iddles family story from the Iddles Brothers Shoe Shop in the 1950s through to Ron’s remarkable policing career.
Next time you’re in Rochy, take a wander down Iddles Lane and discover the story behind the wall.

A SLICE OF HISTORY | ROCHESTER COURT HOUSE
Built in 1889, the Rochester Court House has stood in Moore Street for more than 135 years.
It was used for judicial proceedings for exactly 100 years, closing in 1989.
The red-brick building is a beautiful example of late nineteenth-century Victorian Free Classical architecture. Take a close look and you’ll see decorative brickwork, rendered details, a slate roof and ornate cast iron features.
Following its closure, the building has had many lives. It has been used by the Department of Agriculture, the Assembly of God Church, the Rochester Historical Society and now the Rotary Club of Rochester. It is now also home to the ever growing Rochester community garden.
Today, it remains an important part of Rochester’s streetscape and a reminder of the town’s early development.
