Rochester Mural Festival

  • 2234 Views

A key project initiative is for the town to link with Sheffield in Tasmania and implement a Victorian version of the famous Sheffield Mural Fest.  Under license to Sheffield, Rochester will be the only town in Victoria to run a mural fest in conjunction with Sheffield.  C4R has established a committee to organise the Festival which will be held in March 2017.

A search is on to find talented artists to apply for the Rochester Mural Festival that will run from the 4th March to the 11th March 2017.

Eight artists will be selected from the applications to visit Rochester during the festival next year to paint large murals in the centre of town, based on a theme of ‘”The Circus of Life”.  At the end of the event, the C4R will award one artist with the first prize of $5000 for the best mural, $1000 to the Judges Highly Commended mural and $500 to the People’s Choice Award which will be voted on during the event.  All finalists will receive $500.

Visitors to the festival will be able to view the artists in action all week. The event culminates on the Saturday (11th March @ 12noon) of the long weekend with the announcement of the 2017 winner.  The murals will be located in Moore Street adjacent to the Northern Highway ensuring that they will be visible and accessible to passing visitors.

Thanks to a partnership with the organising committee of the famous Sheffield International Mural Fest, which is held annually in Tasmania, the Rochester Mural Festival will be the only one of its kind held in Victoria.

The 2016 murals, which measure 2.1 by 4.8 metres, have become a colourful feature for the town, remaining in place for viewing until they are removed just prior to the 2017 festival.

Application forms are available from www.rochester.org.au/mural festival or from the event organising committee which can be contacted on 0429852995
